Soho Estates has been granted planning permission by Westminster City Council to install a state-of-the-art, fully controllable transparent LED screen at 17-18 Leicester Square. The LED media glazing will replace outdated windows in the building, enhancing both the building’s efficiency and Leicester Square’s reputation as a world-class entertainment and culture hub.
Covering an area of 184 sq m, the new LED glazing will be used for film premieres, advertising, and public information, with a significant commitment to community benefit. 30% of screen time, equivalent to 109.5 days per year, will be allocated to community groups, arts and cultural initiatives, and charities.
Nick Lawson, Head of Investment and Development at Soho Estates, said:
“Leicester Square has been the heart of London’s entertainment district for over a century, and this investment will ensure it remains at the forefront of global media and cultural events. Our LED glazing will not only modernise the building but also provide a valuable platform for charities, artists, and local organisations.”
The proposals received strong support from local stakeholders, including businesses, property owners, and community groups, who recognise the investment as a boost to Leicester Square’s international appeal. The installation is designed to complement its surroundings. The technology, which remains transparent when not in use, will also reduce noise and improve thermal insulation without compromising external views.
The technology represents the latest innovation in outdoor digital displays and aligns with Leicester Square’s heritage as a centre of public entertainment and illuminated signage since 1904.
With this approval, Soho Estates is set to deliver an innovative and sustainable media platform that enhances Leicester Square’s cultural offering, its environmental performance and its community impact.
